Where Did You Go?
by Gerard J. Surprenant

Where did you go...
Triking down a dusty side street
Dragging your feet from worn pedals
And kicking pebbles from your path?

Where did you go...
To get your knees scraped and legs bruised
To have your jacket torn
And toes showing through your shoes?

Where did you go...
To darkened halls with haloed icons on the walls
And candles in the corners
Flicking shafts of knowledge to your brain?

Where did you go...
To hear angelic voices and dress in purple
Losing thoughts of worldly wonders
Crossing the threshold of hope?

Where did you go...
With leathered hand and aching spirit
On fields of green
With cheering multitudes?

Where did you go...
With rockets red glare in foreign lands
Armed with youth
To hold you safe?

Where did you go...
To learn such daring
To care for love
To search for knowledge and seek your peace?

Where did you go...
And when will you return?
