BY THE SIDE OF THE TRACKS
by Gerard J. Surprenant

The flower that grows by the side of the tracks
Makes up in strength for the beauty it lacks.
In squalid splendor, of bed so poor,
Bloom verdant riches of roots so sure.

The flower that grows by the side of the tracks,
Makes up in strength for the beauty it lacks.
Its beckoning scent draws some to its side.
With all of its loneliness, it still has its pride.

With blossom held high by the side of the tracks,
And pride making up for the beauty it lacks,
In gay profusion multiplied there
In places that Nature left barren and bare.

This flourishing floret by the side of the tracks,
Has strength and pride for the beauty it lacks.
When others have finished with their petals so bold,
One flower still stands with beauty untold.
